Wildenstein & Co. Inc. is thrilled to return to TEFAF Maastricht this year.
The fair will be held from March 14 to March 19, with VIP previews on March 12 and 13.
Following the success of Portraits, the exhibition that inaugurated our new space in New York, we are delighted to present a selection of exceptional pieces at the fair. Two striking and complementary portraits by Gustave Courbet and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec will welcome visitors at the entrance, setting an immediate tone of presence and character as they enter the main booth. There, they will encounter an extraordinary portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud depicting Jean Baptiste Louis Laugeois, Conseiller aux Enquêtes (1694). Clad in swaths of richly hued silks, the sitter is superbly rendered by Rigaud, the most prestigious portraitist in France under Louis XIV, known for his elegant and realistic portrayals of aristocrats, financiers and members of the royal court.
Our presentation will also feature works by François Bonvin, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Henri Gascar, Paul Guigou, Henri-Antoine de Favanne, Louis Michel Van Loo, Hubert Robert, and Alfred Stevens.
In the rear space, we will present one of Pierre Bonnard’s most significant self-portraits, Self Portrait against a Lamp (1908). Compelling for its daring composition and use of color, which anticipates later developments in Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, the work reveals the artist in contre-jour, a mature figure absorbed in introspection. His brow furrowed in quiet concentration, while the off-center hanging lamp casts a radiant halo around his head, heightening the painting’s psychological intensity and modernity.
Also on view will be an intimate selection of works celebrating the female nude including a variety of drawings, paintings and sculptures by Pierre Bonnard, Aristide Maillol, and Albert Marquet, highlighting their shared exploration of the feminine form and sensuality.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out for more information on any of the works mentioned above before the fair.
We look forward to greeting you soon at the fair!
